The Big-Flavor Grill

The Big-Flavor Grill No-Marinade, No-Hassle Recipes for Delicious Steaks, Chicken, Ribs, Chops, Vegetables, Shrimp, and Fish by Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby

The best-selling team of chef Chris Schlesinger and Cook's Illustrated executive editor John Willoughby present a radically simple method of applying flavor boosters to ingredients hot off the grill, maximizing flavor and dramatically reducing grilling time over traditional marinades.

Move your grilling into the twenty-first century!  Don’t waste your time marinating.  Instead, spend your time building big, bold, vibrant flavors with almost no effort.  Grilling masters Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby have replaced time-consuming brines, marinades, and basting sauces with quick and powerful pre-rubs and intense post-grilling flavor boosters to slap on your favorite meat, poultry, fish, seafood, and vegetables hot off the grill.  With their streamlined approach, you’re just three quick steps from a fantastic grilled dinner:

Prep
Coat ingredients with spice rubs before grilling for stronger, better-defined flavors than traditional marinades (and the rubs can be made and applied in the time it takes for the grill to heat up).

Grill
When your fire is ready, simply grill according to the super-basic recipes.

Toss
Toss just-grilled items with vibrant ingredients—citrus, hoisin, fish sauce, ginger, basil, fresh chiles—to take the flavor to another level.

The Big-Flavor Grill’s no-hassle formula means you’ll be turning out these delicious dishes in a snap:
Five-Spice Steak Tips with Grilled Pineapple and Sweet-Sour Sauce
Coriander-Crusted Pork Skewers with Maple-Mustard Barbecue Sauce
Thai-Style Baby Back Ribs
Chicken Breasts with Maple-Soy Glaze and Peanut-Ginger Relish
Spicy Curry-Rubbed Lamb Kebabs with Grilled Peaches
Cumin Seed–Crusted Shrimp with Charred Corn Vinaigrette
Fish Steaks with Sriracha-Basil Butter

Bursting with the bold flavors of spices and condiments from around the world, these 130-plus recipes will set your taste buds on fire and have your friends clamoring for more.

My Review - My husband loves to grill.  I wanted to let him try these recipes.  We explored the book last weekend.  Putting several of the dishes to the test.  We really enjoyed the Thai-Style Baby Back Ribs. This book will be used every weekend from here on out.  I can't wait to try more recipes.  If you love to grill you will love using The Big-Flavor Grill for your fun barbecues.

When I Fall in Love by Susan May Warren

About the book:

Hawaii was the last place Grace Christiansen ever imagined she'd vacation, much less fall in love.  But when her family surprises her with a cooking retreat in paradise, she is pulled-or maybe yanked-away from her predictable, safe life and thrown headfirst into the adventure of a lifetime.
Max Sharpe may make his living on the ice as a pro hockey player, but he feels most at home in the kitchen.  Which is why he lives for the three-week culinary vacation he takes each year in Hawaii. Upon being paired with Grace for a cooking competition, Max finds himself drawn to her passion, confidence, and perseverance.  But just when Grace dares to dream of a future beyond her hometown, Max pulls away.
Wrestling with personal demons, Max fights against opening his heart to a love he knows he should never hope for.  And as his secrets unfold, Grace is torn between the safe path in front of her and what her heart truly desires.  If love means sacrificing her ideal happily ever after, Grace's faith will face its toughest test yet.

Penny Wise A Windy City Neighbors Book Review

Michelle Jasper doesn’t have much time to hang out with her neighbors—not with thirteen-year-old twins, another teen with hoop dreams, a full-time job as a caseworker, volunteering at a crisis pregnancy center, and heading up the women’s ministry at Northside Baptist.  Her husband’s constantly changing shifts as an air traffic controller at the world’s busiest airport—Chicago’s O’Hare International—and responsibilities as a trusted deacon at Northside only add to the juggling act at the Jasper household.
Her new neighbors, Harry and Estelle Bentley, mean well with their friendly efforts to bring people together, but how can she deal with neighborhood concerns—like Greg Singer, who lost his job and is now trying to recruit sales reps from the neighborhood for his new venture—when she’s confronted with tragic family situations daily in her job?  Like little Candy and her baby brother Pookey, victims of neglect . . .
With the “tyranny of the urgent” crowding out the important, Michelle is blindsided by danger involving her own kids—and a personal crisis that calls into question the very values she holds dear.  How could this happen?  Does God even care?
As her life unravels, a missing penny—and a “penny from heaven”—give her a shred of hope.  But will God just laugh at her penny test?
Dave and Neta Jackson are award-winning authors living in the Chicago area where their parallel novels from the Yada Yada House of Hope and Harry Bentley series are set.  As a husband/wife writing team, Dave and Neta Jackson are enthusiastic about books, kids, walking with God, gospel music, and each other!  Together they are the authors or coauthors of over 100 books.

My Review - I am so happy that I got a copy of this book to review.  Penny Wise is a great story of finding hope in the midst of the storm.  Holding on and treading water when that's all you can do.  God always helps us when we need it.  He always shows us the way out of the temptations.  I enjoyed this book from cover to cover.  I highly recommend this book.

NO LIMITS ON LOVE, ACCEPTANCE, AND SECOND CHANCES FOR HOUSTON PASTOR
Revolutionary Pastor Challenges the Church to Throw Open Its Doors

Nashville, Tenn., March 31, 2014— In response to headlines dubbing America as the “entitlement nation,” hustler-turned-pastor Rudy Rasmus of St. John’s Methodist in Houston calls Christians to love, give, and serve—no matter what.  “How do we dare stand and say we know better than God who is worthy of love and who isn’t?” asks Rasmus.  As the number of working poor and food stamp beneficiaries continues to rise, the plight of the homeless explodes, and churches become alarmingly more exclusive rather than inclusive, Rasmus, contends that love – not judgment, not apathy, not willful ignorance – is the only way anything will change.

In his new book, Love. Period. (Worthy Publishing, July 2014)Rasmus asserts that when Jesus called His followers to love one another, He meant that Christians are to love regardless of class, race, gender, orientation, or past deeds.  Rasmus challenges readers to admit they may be afraid of people who are different from them and then actively seek to build bridges across those divides.

Rasmus knows firsthand the power of love to unite, as one-third of his 9,000-member congregation are or were homeless.  He is also the cofounder of Bread of Life, a nonprofit organization that distributes nine tons of food to the hungry each week and provides Houston families with education, counseling, HIV/AIDS testing, and housing.

“I will not be a part of an institution or religion that judges or marginalizes a person based on race, abilities, gender, orientation, identity, or social status,” declares Rasmus.  “But I will be a part of a Love Revolution that fights for the right of people everywhere to love and be loved by God.”  Love. Period. signals to readers that a new day is rising, where hate and apathy are refused and people live instead in the most daring way possible— loving, period.

Rudy Rasmus has led St. John’s United Methodist Church in Houston with his wife, Juanita, for more than 20 years. St. John’s has more than 9,000 members and is one of the most culturally diverse congregations in the country.  A former columnist for O Magazine and the author of Touch, Rasmus attributes the success of the church to a congregation that embraces the vision of tearing down walls of classism, sexism, and racism, and replacing them with unconditional love.  Rudy and Juanita have two daughters.

Worthy Publishing Group (www.worthypublishing.com) is a privately held, independent voice in Christian and inspirational publishing, based in Nashville, Tennessee, comprised of three divisions.  Worthy Books publishes a boutique list of trade titles across a broad spectrum of genres, including current events, biography, fiction, devotionals, spiritual and personal growth, and specialized Bibles.  Ellie Claire is a line of gift and paper expressions, and Worthy Inspired is a value-priced, impulse book imprint.

New from Quilts of Love Rival Hearts

They both want the promotion.  But will they find out that it is worth the cost?
Molly Henderson and Ben Weaver have been rival magazine writers for the same publishing group for years.  When both come up for the same promotion, they find themselves in an unexpected competition to win the spot.  Molly, editor of Quilter’s Heart, and Ben, editor of Outdoor Adventures, must switch roles, each working for the other for one month, then submit an article at the end of their quests.  Can girly‑girl Molly survive the outdoor adventures that Ben has planned?  Can Ben navigate the perils of the social dynamics of quilting events without destroying a valuable quilt in one short month?  More importantly, in this he‑said, she‑said situation, will Molly and Ben give in to their attraction and fall in love, no matter who wins?
About Quilts of Love:  Quilts tell stories of love and loss, hope and faith, tradition and new beginnings.  The Quilts of Love series focuses on the women who quilted all of these things into their family histories.  A new book releases each month and features contemporary and historical romances as well as women's fiction and the occasional light mystery.  You will be drawn into the endearing characters of this series and be touched by their stories.

About the Author:

Tara Randel is the author of five romance novels includingLasting LoveMelody of Love, and This Time Love. A member of ACFW, Tara is also the lead author of the new Annie's Mysteries series (see AnniesMysteries.com). Tara lives in New Port Richey, Florida.

Guyanese "cook-up" rice recipe

Guyanese "cook-up" rice recipe

Today I am sharing a recipe with you all that is a very common Guyanese main/side dish called "cook-up" rice. I think it is one of those meals that you almost always have the ingredients on hand to make and it is very versatile. In all the different West Indian countries this dish is called by different names like rice & peas, peas & rice or pilau. I have always known it to be called cook-up rice and it can be made with any type of rice or beans/legumes. Typically you would use pigeon peas, black eyed peas or red beans. One of the main ingredients that makes this rice dish so special is the use of coconut milk, herbs and spices. Everyone makes their own version and today I will share mine. Please be aware that my recipes are seldom done...Read More

One of the main ingredients that makes this rice dish so special is the use of coconut milk, herbs and spices. Everyone makes their own version and today I will share mine. Please be aware that my recipes are seldom done...Read More

Ooey Gooey Cake Batter Bars

Ooey Gooey Cake Batter Bars

Growing up my mother was not the best cook on the block but she sure could bake. The apple didn't fall far from the tree in this case. While I enjoy cooking and attempting to make edible dishes, it just isn't my thing. You should stick to what your good at in and out of the kitchen. I'm good at burning things and also setting the smoke alarm off. That alone tells me that my culinary interests should be channeled to something more productive. Now when it comes to baking I'm your girl. There is one recipe she made that quickly became popular in our home and during the holidays. My mom called them "Chess Bars" but I always thought of them to be more of an Ooey Gooey Cake Batter Bar. They are made with a few simple ingredients including...Read More
